Volunteer Spotlight: Alyssa
I give to UNRWA USA because the needs of Palestinian refugees are real, and they need our help. I’ve always been a follower and advocate for the work of UNRWA. As an Arab-American, it’s amazing to see the UN have a group like this.
Four years ago I visited Lebanon and spent time in the Sabra and Shatila camps. There I was able to see first-hand the work that UNRWA does. From schools, to hospitals, to mental health, I just felt UNRWA was able to give dignity back to an incredibly well-deserving group of people that so much taken away from them. Inspired by my trip, I followed UNRWA USA on Facebook and began giving a monthly donation.
My fiance and I are getting married this Friday and we’ve decided to donate our registry to UNRWA USA! I knew from the beginning I didn’t want to have a traditional registry. We already have everything we need. So we decided to pay it forward, and channel all the goodwill we'd be receiving toward others. I thought if people felt inclined to give a gift, that they could give a gift that has more meaning. I found out about Crowdrise which allows you to create free fundraising pages, and I’ve raised $1,175 already! What’s even better, my company has a program that will match up to $3,000 each year. If my friends and family help me raise $3,000, I will be able to give $6,000 to support UNRWA USA’s work benefiting Palestine refugees. Donate here.
I have been very encouraged by the work seen coming out of UNRWA USA, and hope you will be inspired to give, too. Interested in doing something similar? Email us or call 202-223-3767.
