UNRWA USA is proud to announce its partnership with the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Relief Canada to provide emergency support to those displaced due to the ongoing crisis in Gaza. In July, ICNA Relief Canada and UNRWA USA signed an agreement to provide $100,000 CAD and $200,000 CAD for UNRWA’s emergency food distribution and emergency distribution of non-food items, respectively. This money was given by generous ICNA Relief Canada supporters in the spirit of Eid ul-Fitr.

Since the start of the Israeli assault on Gaza on July 8, the people of Gaza have faced heartbreaking death, destruction, and displacement. Hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians have been forced from their homes, fleeing to the safe shelter of UNRWA schools. As of July 30, UNRWA is sheltering over 220,000 people in 86 schools. Most were forced to flee their homes with absolutely nothing. UNRWA is providing daily meals to those seeking shelter in its facilities, as well as other essential non-food items including mattresses, blankets, hygiene kits, diapers, and other personal supplies. The needs are immense, but the support of ICNA Relief Canada will help UNRWA do more to alleviate the suffering.

ICNA Relief Canada’s generous contribution will feed approximately 2,663 displaced people for one week while providing approximately 400 displaced families (2,000 individuals) with non-food items deemed critical for maintaining a basic way of life that ensures dignity despite the destruction. This emergency support will help these displaced individuals cope with the stress generated by the devastating and widespread escalation of violence in Gaza.

“With the generous contributions of our donors, ICNA Relief Canada has made their Emergency & Disaster Relief programs a priority. We believe that striving to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza is a responsibility that all of us have and, with our continuing partnership with UNRWA, we are able to maintain this belief with excellence,” says ICNA Relief Canada Executive Director, Shaukat Hussain.

UNRWA USA and ICNA Relief Canada’s partnership demonstrate a commitment from the people of Canada to protect and assist the people of Gaza in their great time of need.

UNRWA USA’s Executive Director, Abby Smardon, says “understanding the massive need for emergency support for those caught in the brutal assault on Gaza, we are deeply grateful for this new partnership with ICNA Relief Canada to provide relief to those in Gaza who need it most. We look forward to continuing this partnership even beyond the current crisis in Gaza to ensure that Palestine refugees lead lives of dignity and hope.”
